Tena – A Match Beyond Student

After high school, Tena started at Northeastern, her dream school.  She spent a year there but had to withdraw due to the costs.  Without a scholarship or credit, it was difficult to get loans; Tena is still paying off her debt from that year at Northeastern.  After withdrawing from Northeastern, Tena enrolled in Bunker Hill Community College.  She was working full-time and attempted to take night classes, but the schedule was not workable.  Tena kept telling herself she would do college next semester.

Tena enrolled in Match Beyond on July 1, 2015

What attracted you to Match Beyond?

I learned about Match Beyond from one of the learning coaches.  I liked the fact that I could go at my own pace and potentially earn my degree in less than 6 months.

Match Beyond helps people like me to earn a college degree quickly, even if they’ve been putting it off for a long time.

What is it like to have a coach at Match Beyond?

The one-on-one support lets me know I’m not alone.  If I don’t have the answer, I know there’s someone there who will have an answer for me.  My coach gives me encouragement, suggests ideas, looks into things for me, and helps me plan my academic path.

How would you describe the academic work?

The work is very fun.  I love practical applications; they make so much more sense to me.  This program is like the new cutting edge technology.  It’s the new next biggest thing.  It’s a new way of learning and achieving.

What kinds of career support do you receive through Match Beyond?

The employment team frequently sends me job postings that fit my experiences and interests.  I am currently applying to a position they sent me.  I also have the opportunity to attend networking events.

How will earning your college degree advance your career?

I am planning to earn my Associate’s degree and then go onto earn my Bachelor’s degree through Match Beyond.  I can’t wait to put it on my resume.  I have the work experience, so it’s just the lack of a degree that’s holding me back.

I’ve been working in youth development.  My goal is to become an organizational psychologist working with various companies, maintaining their organizations.

What would you say to other young people thinking about Match Beyond?

If you’re serious about getting your degree, go for it.
